Goodbye 2009!

It's the last day of 2009, the last day of the decade, and it seems fitting to do some reflecting on the big changes in our lives that occurred this year.

Our first child, our first son, was born on Labor Day. Since then our lives have changed in ways almost unimaginable. There have been tremendous ups and some not-so-fun lows. We have a beautiful, healthy, happy baby boy who is almost four months old! It is really hard to believe how fortunate we are and how far we've come since that first week we brought home that tiny bundle and wondered if our lives would ever seem normal again.

I'm happy to report that normalcy has returned and we've welcomed it back although it is a different normal than the one we used to know (there are similar components though). We go to bed earlier and we get up earlier. We handle chores mostly separately instead of together because one of us tends to Colin while the other gets things done. We spend time together marvelling over our son and his huge grins, his funny faces, his loud coos and babbles, his attempts to roll over, his raspberry bubble blowing, and his gorgeous blue eyes. It is in these moments that we feel most connected as a family and I feel the strains of lack of sleep or lack of freedom melt away. I treasure these times and I so look forward to all of the many more happy times that are in store for us in this coming year as Colin continues to grow, change, and astound us.

It hasn't been an easy past few weeks. Colin's napping continues to be sporadic and his once 10-12 hour stretches of sleep at night have disappeared leaving in their place multiple night wakings some nights. We are hopeful that solid foods might help. And of course the biggest change in our lives since he was born will be that I am returning to work on Monday and Krystal will become his nanny and become a big part of our lives. We are hopeful on this last day of the year that we will successfully navigate the changes in store and that they will be positive for all of us.

Happy New Year to you from the Okrzesiks!

  2. Hope work is going well. I've been thinking about you! Also, I'm glad to hear that you went through the whole "what happened to our lives?" scenario. It was tough, but I think the "new normal" is turning out to be pretty good. Different, for sure, but good.
