Rough Week

Well, like I said before, just when you get them all figured out, they go and change on you! We are definitely going through some kind of a change with Colin here at the Okrzesik house. The week before last (the week that he turned 3 months old) he started sleeping 11-12 hours straight at night which was wonderful. But gradually I noticed that his naps were getting shorter. And then last week he seemed to hit some sort of a growth spurt and was waking up two to three times a night to eat. And his naps continued to get shorter. Now he is resisting naps pretty much altogether and will fall asleep in our arms but wakes up and cries when we try to put him in his crib!

Of course we've turned to the Internet and different books to try and research what may be going on. Last night he had another 11 hour straight stretch with an additional hour or so before the stretch totalling about 12.5 hours of night-time sleep. One book that we read suggested that a 3 month old only needs about 13 hours of sleep in total in a given day so our best guess as of right now is that he isn't napping as much because he's getting so much sleep at night. We had been starting his bedtime routine at about 6 PM but it is seeming like he can stay up a little later these days so we're trying to gradually extend out his bedtime and also we're going to start getting him up consistently at about 7:15 in the morning since that is about when he'll need to get up when I return to work. It will definitely be nice if he is up a little later when I return to work so that I can spend more time with him in the evening. We've added reading books to our bedtime routine to keep him up later - something I greatly enjoy! It is fun because he actually seems to enjoy looking at the pictures and has a fairly good attention span.

Oh the joys of a growing baby and changing routines!

  1. I don't really have any advice on sleeping seeing as how Charlotte still doesn't sleep as well as she did before I went back to work. However, I did come across this on this blog I read: http://www.alphamom.com/smackdown/2009/11/the_234_sleep_routine.php

It's supposed to help get babies in a good nap routine. Worth a try? In any case, I do love Amalah's advice blog. It's funny and worth adding to your Google Reader.
