OK, so it's not really an emergency but we are getting a nanny so I thought the title of this post might be funny (Mom, it's a TV show). Yes, after weeks of meticulous daycare searching in the earliest weeks of my pregnancy, Keith and I have totally changed directions at the last minute. It's funny how actually having a child is so different than just planning for having a child!
The more we thought about our lives after I go back to work, the more the prospect of a nanny sounded appealing. The thought of getting Colin up and ready every morning, feeding him, getting ourselves ready, and then driving 20 minutes to Powell to Miss Jane's and then 15 minutes to work (and the reverse in the evenings) just didn't sound very appealing. Colin goes to bed so early these days that in the evenings we'd have even less time with him before bed if we had to pick him up at the babysitter every night. And the idea of him being here in his own house and getting one-on-one care and attention of course sounded invaluable. So we decided to talk to an agency here in town and see what it was all about. We knew that there was a range in prices for nannies and we weren't sure what we could afford. We interviewed four candidates over the phone and liked two of them a lot. The first accepted another offer before we could have her over for an in-person interview. The second (and the one we liked the best on the phone) is going to be our nanny! Her name is Krystal and she is in her late thirties with two teenage daughters. She has twelve years of experience working in daycare centers and she has been a nanny to a little boy for the past two years. She is a total sweetheart and really seems to have connected with Colin. We have had her over twice so far - once for an verbal interview and once for a hands-on interview where she took care of Colin for about 3 hours while I just hung back and observed. We'll be having her over the week after Christmas for an orientation session to get her familiar with our home, where things are kept, and to talk more about Colin's routines.
I think she is going to be a great fit for our family and I am very hopeful that it will work out well for everyone.

That is very exciting. Eric and I have talked about this subject a number of times already. Getting to have your little one at home and receiving individual care is just priceless. One of my co-workers has a nanny and they just love it. It's something that seems out of reach, but based on what my co-worker has told me, it's actually economically feasible in the city. Yay for Colin!
ReplyDeleteMiss Jane seemed wonderful, but I'm sure the added time you will have with Colin plus the extra attention he will receive during the day is going to be excellent! Let us know how the transition goes!! We'll be thinking of Colin. When do you go back to work? Will you be able to slowly transition back with any flex time or on a part-time schedule?
ReplyDeleteSo excited for you! This seems like the perfect solution for you and for Colin!!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds really great. If I didn't have a great lady so close by, I certainly would have considered a nanny (or maybe a shared one if I knew anyone with another baby). I totally agree that you want to spend as much of your time off of work with Colin and not spending it in the car picking him up and dropping him off. I hope it works out!
