Well so far, February hasn't turned out to be much better than January for us. On Wednesday we came home and discovered that several items were missing from our house (jewelry, cash, gift cards, and some old coins). The problem is that we don't know for sure who took the items. We can't say with 100% confidence that we saw any of those items since Tuesday, February 1 when we used some of the cash to pay the neighbor girls for helping us watch Colin on the snow day. Since then the cleaning people have been in the house, Abby has been in the house, Maggie has been in the house (Abby was sick with strept throat on Monday, February 7, and the agency sent us Maggie as her back-up), and according to Abby some roofers were in the house on Wednesday, February 9th. We had a leak during the ice storm and the roofers had been doing some work to repair it. According to them they didn't come into the house on that Wednesday because they just came to see if the ice had melted enough for them to get on our roof. We didn't know they were coming on Wednesday.
So it has been a really rough few days. We suspect it was Abby and I won't drudge up all the reasons why. But honestly we'll probably never know for sure. We filed a police report and the Dublin police certainly do take their jobs seriously! They had Abby and Maggie come into the station to make a statement and they also contacted the roofing company and the cleaning company. They fingerprinted the firebox where we kept the coins (no good ones were found).
We are hoping that we may get some insurance money from the agency to cover our losses (about $1600) because even if we can't prove who took the items, Abby let someone into our house without us telling her it was OK to let them in and now things are missing so it's a bad situation either way. I believe she's getting terminated for that too. But we'll see. Our home owner's policy has a $1000 deductible making it really not worth it.
Obviously we told the agency not to send Abby back. I took off Thursday and Keith worked from home on Friday. There are still two more weeks until Krystal comes back to us (hopefully that is all). During that time we're taking him to Ms. Jane's for 5of those days (she couldn't make room for us every day). Ms. Jane is the lady that runs the in-home daycare that my nephews went to and that we were going to take Colin to until we decided to get a nanny. It's about 20 minutes from our house in the opposite direction of work. The other 5 days we're going to get a nanny from the agency but also one of us will work from home so that they aren't here with Colin alone.
Unfortunately our trust in others has really been compromised which is a sad thing. Maybe we were too trusting before. We now have to decide if we want to switch cleaning companies. We have had this one for 3 years and the same husband and wife team has been cleaning our house with no problems. But you never know...
So come on 2011! Bring us some better days!

What terrible news! I am so sorry you have to go through this. It's horrible to lose the money and valued coins, but even worse to have your faith and trust shaken in those that you employ - especially in your home and with your son! I'm relieved to hear that that Ms. Jane can make it work for Colin for the majority of the time Ms. Krystal is out, though. This is a time that I really wish we lived nearby, if for no other reason to give you a hug and bring you some comfort food. Miss you- thinking positive thoughts for you and yours!
ReplyDeleteOh Maggie. This is so horrible. You must feel so violated. I can't even imagine how that must feel to have people you trust betray you like that. I hope Krystal recovers soon and is back to giving you the peace of mind you need. I also wish you were close by, so we could help out in some way. Take care.
ReplyDeleteMAGGIE!!! How awful!!! I wish I lived closer- I'd happily take Mr. Colin until this little boy of ours decides to arrive.
ReplyDeleteThinking of you and hoping that everything gets sorted soon. I hope Colin has great days at Ms. Jane's house and I know you will be so thrilled to have Ms. Krystal back. Hang in there!
Oh Maggie, that is terrible! I concur with what the girls said in their comments. I'd care for your little guy if we were there too. I think 2011 has to make up for all this the rat of the year! We're sending positive vibes your way.
