I am officially on bed rest. This morning I had a non-stress test at the hospital and then my cervical check at my ob/gyn. I am 3 cm dilated and still 70% effaced so I am on bed rest and not working any longer (although I am still going to do a little bit of work to wrap up some loose ends). I can actually work on my laptop while laying down fairly well when I'm propped up on pillows which is how I am typing this now!
They gave me a fetal fibronectic test this morning. It tests for the protein fetal fibronectin which is produced by the fetal membranes and is a sort of glue that holds the fetal sac to the uterus. A negative result of this test is a very good sign that I won't go into labor for another 1-2 weeks. The positive result is less conclusive. I could go into labor soon or I could not. The negative result is a lot more conclusive so that is what we are hoping for!! I should know tomorrow what the results are. If they are positive, I'll have steroid shots. If the results are negative then I won't.
Apparently if I can make it to 34 weeks that is a great milestone to achieve. I would not be considered drastically preterm at that point. Only a little preterm :) My friend Angie had her twins at 34 weeks, 2 days and they were 5 lbs and 6 lbs and didn't spend any time in the NICU!
I really didn't think I'd have to go on bed rest today. Although I did have 4 or 5 contractions during my non-stress test this morning. Enough for the midwife to take notice and come in and ask me about them. She was going to do a cervical check herself until I told her I was on my way to my doctor to get checked. During the non-stress tests I am in the L&D triage room (the ones at Dublin Hospital are nicer than at the hospital where I'll actually deliver. Dublin Hospital is very nice and new). I get hooked up to two heart rate monitors and a contraction monitor. There is a TV to watch so it's not bad. This morning Baby B was not cooperating (she is always the troublemaker). She was moving around so much they couldn't get a consistent reading on her.
So now we just wait and see what happens. My instructions are to lay down as much as possible but they didn't go crazy with it. I can still shower and go upstairs and all of that. I'm just supposed to limit it as much as I can. I can't believe I may be meeting these girls in the next couple of weeks!! I better get Keith to take those nursery pictures!

Wow Maggie - this is wild! I really, really hope your girls stay put for at least another week (four more would be ideal, of course!), so that they have the chance to gain a little more weight.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a lot of friends and family to help you out, now that you won't be able to do much with Colin for the next few weeks.
Thinking positive thoughts that your test results are negative.
