Scary Times

My youngest nephew Eli (he's six years old) is in the hospital with H1N1 flu and pneumonia. Luckily he is recovering nicely and should be discharged tomorrow. He is no longer on oxygen or IV drugs and has even started eating a little bit. Unfortunately his Mom (my sister) has it now too but not nearly as bad as Eli. He started feeling badly on Friday morning. Colin and I were supposed to go over there during the day to hang out with my sister and the boys (they had the day off of school) while our house cleaners were here. She called and said that Eli had some cold symptoms so I decided to play it safe and not go over. By Saturday morning he was having trouble breathing and had a fever of 103.5!

This flu is just everywhere it seems and is spreading like wildfire. It is really scary. Colin can't be vaccinated for H1N1 or for the seasonal flu since he is under six months old so that makes it especially scary for us. We have been keeping him out of public places as much as possible (not even taking him to places like the grocery store or Target). We sometimes go on errands and either Keith or I will sit in the car with Colin while the other one dashes in the store. It stinks but with such a bad flu going around, it is definitely worth it to play it safe. Meanwhile, keep my nephew and his family in your thoughts for a speedy recovery!

  2. Oh Maggie,

That's really scary! I hope Eli and your sister make a quick and full recovery. Charlotte is also too young to get the vaccine, but this means that you, Keith, Chris, and I are top priority for getting it once it's available. Plus, supposedly the antibodies that we'll build up from the vaccine will transfer to our babies via our milk to help prevent them getting the flu.
